Troon North and the New Scottsdale Golf Retreat: A Desert Pairing Worth Planning Now

By Brian Weis

Scottsdale has never lacked for great golf, but it has always lacked one thing - a dedicated place to stay that puts you right in the middle of it. That gap is about to close.
The new Scottsdale Golf Retreat at Troon North opens this fall, and the concept is exactly what every serious golf trip planner has been waiting for: luxury suite accommodations sitting steps from the first tee at one of the most celebrated 36-hole facilities in the American Southwest. Bookings are open now, which means the time to plan is not next winter. It is right now.

The Golf: Two Courses That Earn Every Superlative

Troon North stands as a hallmark of the Scottsdale desert golf experience, with two 18-hole courses stretching through the natural ravines and foothills in the shadow of Pinnacle Peak. The word "hallmark" gets tossed around a lot in golf marketing, but in this case it fits. These two courses consistently land on the short list of must-plays in the Southwest, and neither one lets you down.

The Monument Course opened in 1990, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, and underwent a significant renovation in 2007 led by Weiskopf himself. The Pinnacle followed in 1995, also a Weiskopf design, and quickly earned a reputation as the harder of the two - tighter fairways, more strategic off the tee, and greens that slope in directions you will not appreciate until the third three-putt. Both courses have deceiving fairways and large sloping greens, and both stretch through and around the granite boulders of Pinnacle Peak, putting you squarely in the Sonoran Desert landscape on every hole.

The Monument has its own literal monument - a 25-foot boulder sitting in the third fairway that the construction crew could not move, so instead it became a great photo opportunity and a memorable obstacle. Only in Arizona.

Play both courses if you can. They are different enough in character that the second round feels like a new experience, and the conditions at Troon North - bentgrass greens, immaculate fairways, full turf driving range - are the kind that make you want to stay all week. Which, as it happens, you now can.

Where to Stay: The New Scottsdale Golf Retreat

The Scottsdale Golf Retreat is set within the Sonoran Desert just steps away from the Troon North clubhouse and first tee, with one-bedroom and four-bedroom suites designed with the golfer in mind. The four-bedroom configuration is the obvious choice for a buddy trip foursome - you get a real living space, not a row of hotel rooms connected by a hallway where someone always gets the one next to the ice machine.

The suites are desert modern in style, with pool hang areas on the property for the end-of-day wind-down that every golf trip requires. You know the moment - shoes off, recap of who made what, mild debate about whether that putt on 14 actually caught the edge. That conversation is better in a comfortable suite than a generic hotel lobby.

Package guests receive the exclusive advantage of booking tee times up to 365 days in advance, which matters more than it sounds at a facility like Troon North, where peak season tee times disappear well before most people even start planning their trips.

The Packages: Book Now for the Grand Opening

The opening play here is the Grand Opening Fall Special, valid for November 2026 with bookings required by August 31st. The package includes two nights in a four-bedroom luxury suite, two rounds of golf at Troon North, breakfast per night, complimentary bag storage, unlimited practice facility access, a complimentary same-day replay round, and 10% off any additional nights. Pricing starts at $1,155 per person based on four players.

For groups wanting more time, the four-night Buddy Package adds a fourth round and bumps the savings on extra nights. There is also a three-night signature package in between. You can reach the concierge team directly at sgrconcierge@troon.com to build out something custom, which is worth doing if you have a specific mix of courses in mind.

Extend the Trip: Other Courses Worth Adding

The Scottsdale Golf Retreat connects you to the full Troon Golf network, and the area around Troon North has no shortage of quality options for days when you want to mix things up.

Kierland Golf Club brings a more parkland character to the desert - it is a Scott Miller design that plays through wetlands and open fairways, a different look and feel from the boulder-strewn desert of Troon North. Eagle Mountain in Fountain Hills gives you elevation changes and long views that genuinely stop you mid-swing. It is the kind of course that plays harder than it looks and makes you feel better than you probably deserve when you have a good round.

The Boulders Golf Club in Carefree has one of the most dramatic settings in the entire state. Two courses - the North and South - wind through giant rock formations that look like they belong on another planet. If your group has never played the Boulders, add it.

For players who want a serious test, Quintero Golf Club about an hour west of Scottsdale is a Rees Jones design that does not apologize for being difficult. It has landed on national rankings and rewards golfers who think their way around a course rather than just swinging for it. Dove Valley Ranch rounds out the short list - a well-conditioned desert course with a layout that gives you room to breathe without ever letting you get comfortable.

The Bottom Line

Scottsdale has always been a top-five golf destination in America. The Scottsdale Golf Retreat gives it something it was missing - a purpose-built home base for golfers who want to be in the game from the moment they wake up until the moment they pour that last drink on the patio.

Two Top 100 courses at your doorstep, suite accommodations built for foursomes, stay-and-play packages with a 365-day tee time booking window, and a short drive to some of the best supporting courses in the Southwest. That is a trip worth putting on the calendar.

Book it at scottsdalegolfretreat.com.

About: Brian Weis

Brian Weis While Brian Weis has made a name for himself in the golf world, he also appreciates the finer things in life—like a world-class spa treatment after a grueling 18 holes (or even after a casual round where the only thing working hard was his golf cart). A self-proclaimed "golfer who enjoys relaxation more than practice," Brian has developed a deep appreciation for massages that unknot his questionable swing mechanics, saunas that sweat out a few too many post-round drinks, and infinity pools with views as stunning as a well-manicured par 3.

Brian’s spa journey began as a reluctant tag-along to couples' massages and resort spa packages but quickly evolved into a full-fledged appreciation for hot stone therapy, deep-tissue recovery, and the occasional seaweed wrap (don’t knock it till you try it). Now, he seeks out the best spa retreats, thermal baths, and relaxation havens wherever his travels take him—whether it's a luxury golf resort with a five-star spa or a hidden wellness gem perfect for unwinding in style.

On SpaTrips.com, Brian shares his experiences, reviews, and insider tips on the best places to soothe sore muscles, indulge in rejuvenating treatments, and find true relaxation—whether you're a hardcore golfer in need of recovery or just someone looking for the ultimate escape. After all, what’s the point of a bucket list golf trip if you can’t top it off with an expert massage, a hot soak, and maybe even a ridiculously plush robe"
